As part of these and other projects Smartran has been involved with the specification of an ITSO back office, smartcard system security, multi-model transport ticketing, e-money, micropayment systems, software supplier audits, e-government and clearing & settlement systems.

For multi-application Smartcard requirements we have advised and assisted Local Authorities requiring solutions which encompass requirements in Leisure, Transport, Libraries, Schools, Residents, Loyalty, Visitors and Parking.

Smartran has assisted and advised key decision makers in the Strategic Rail Authority and Association of Train Operating Companies (ATOC) on the overall approach and system requirements to support multi-modal ITSO compatible Smartcard applications.  This work has involved the review of Smartcard scheme requirements and definition of alternative architectures.  Our previous work in this area has involved analysis of function, investigation of interfaces and checking the fit to ITSO standards.

Smartran has assisted at transport service provider in the investigation of faults and unreliability of Electronic Ticketing Machines equipped with smartcard readers. Smartran was able to make a number of recommendations concerning fault diagnostics, maintenance and steps to reduce the incidence of service affecting faults. As more service providers adopt smartcard technology, the reliability and operational maintenance of these systems will be critical to revenue and service performance.
