Smartran brings together a unique combination of experience with smart card technology, NFC mobile applications and transport ticketing. Our credentials in transport include:

Smartran has worked with Unicard Ltd to develop a demonstration of ITSO capability using NFC technology. This has been demonstrated to DfT and ITSO and is being considered by a number of transport operators.

Assertis appointed Smartran to provide technical advice and consultancy in the development of a new web-based ticketing system Smartran was retained for it’s knowledge and experience in rail ticketing, ticketing systems and accreditation. The service was brought to market 6 month earlier than expected due to the assistance we provided.

Smartran has been awarded a framework contract for the provision of ITSO technical consultancy support services to Local Authorities and Transport Operators in the South West of England. The primary objectives are to enable these organisations to implement smart ticketing and utilise a shared back office which will manage the configuration of their ticketing infrastructure and capture the transaction data.

First Group selected Smartran to provide consultancy and technical support in bids for rail franchises including introduction of ITSO based smart ticketing & settlement

Smartran assisted and advised key decision makers in the Strategic Rail Authority and Association of Train Operating Companies (ATOC) on the overall approach and system requirements to support multi-modal ITSO compatible Smart Card applications. This work has involved the review of Smart Card scheme requirements and definition of alternative architectures. Our previous work in this area has involved analysis of function, investigation of interfaces and checking the fit to ITSO standards. We provided technical support to the production of ITT specifications and review of supplier responses.

As part of these and other projects Smartran has been involved with the specification of an ITSO back office, smart card system security, multi-model transport ticketing, e-money, payment systems, software supplier audits, e-government and clearing & settlement systems.

Smartran has assisted a transport service provider in the investigation of faults and unreliability of Electronic Ticketing Machines equipped with smart card readers. Smartran was able to make a number of recommendations concerning fault diagnostics, maintenance and steps to reduce the incidence of service affecting faults. As more service providers adopt smart card technology, the reliability and operational maintenance of these systems will be critical to revenue and service performance.

Our consultants bring a broad range of additional design and implementation experience.
